For smart and chic retailers, recycled = premium

Tulsack-Versa-Delica-lowrez

Have you noticed those stylish shopping bags that up-market department stores lavish on their customers? They’re a far cry from the plastic bags offered by the big-box retailers, and they are clearly not an inexpensive line item in the operating budget of a Nordstrom or Macys. Shoppers at these retailer locations have come to expect quality shopping bags as part of the shopping experience. In fact, some retailers’ shopping bags are so nice that shoppers use them for other purposes,… Read More

Innovative grocers are adding extra green to the produce aisle

Crown-Poly produce bags

The produce department of any supermarket is one of those places where one cannot help but feel in touch with planet Earth. You might be just paces from the cleaning products aisle where chemicals of all types are beautifully merchandised, but in the produce department you’re surrounded by the bounty of many American states and foreign countries. You pick out a couple of peaches, tear off a produce bag, and add them to your basket. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

Saving Trees One Gift Bag at a Time

Gift`nGrow

Terri Martin wants to change the way people think about reusing gift bags. After digging through her used gift bag pile, she discovered they were neither made in the USA nor constructed of recycled material. That prompted Terri to start a business that made sense for the environment.

Gift ’n Grow offers eco-friendly, 100% recycled paper gift bags made in the USA. To encourage people to reuse the bags, inside each one is an I.D. code to help identify that… Read More

What do Bread Bags made from Recycled Paper, Coffee Cups and Water have in Common?

AcmeBreadBag

One of our customers, Acme Bread, a well know artisan bread bakery in Northern California, is saving more than 70,000 gallons of water each year simply by selling their bread in their new bread bags. At no cost to them, we switched the paper we used to produce their printed bags to 40% post-consumer recycled paper, which is FDA approved for food contact. This is a pretty unusual for the bread industry.

My two boys grew up on Acme… Read More

ECOBAGS® Case Study: The Itsy Bitsy Bikini Package

ECOBAGS® Bikini Package

Sometimes thinking outside the box means thinking inside the bag. The ECOBAGS® product team was approached to help a customer create packaging for a line of fun, funky bikinis. The challenge with displaying two piece bathing suits was that if they were hung the sets got broken, stolen or damaged. In a solid box they weren’t visible, and the owners were not willing to use any plastic in the design since the suits themselves were “eco luxury” items.

As we… Read More

Eco-Voila! Holiday Wrapping with a Re-Purpose

Wine bags

Let’s face it, I’m wrapping challenged. I love beautiful wrapping paper but I hate that it’s still not made from recycled paper and that it’s coated and can’t be recycled.

Each year, I drag out lightly-used, carefully stored wrapping paper from years past and then I don’t use it. What seemed perfectly good to re-use doesn’t look good in the light of this holiday season. Or, I try to use newspaper wrapping but somehow cartoons and bad news don’t really… Read More

Plastic Bags from Shellfish

Seashells

Sounds catchy doesn’t it? We saw this headline on a few websites recently and discussed in social media. We all want the perfect solution for our retail bags. But can this be true? You just may be surprised.

Believe it or not, there actually is some truth to this one. Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is a white, chalk-like mineral derived from trillions of ancient shellfish accumulated in the remains of prehistoric seas. The carbonate is mined underground and is used in many… Read More
