On August 31, 2010 the California Senate rejected AB 1998, a proposal to eliminate single use plastic bags. The ban, which passed the Assembly in June, would have eliminated single use plastic bags in grocery stores and pharmacies, starting in 2012 and in liquor and convenience stores in 2013. The proposal also included $2M in grants/loans for green businesses.
