Two colors out on whiteSome companies and organizations look only at the utilitarian value of a shipping container – “get it from point A to point B”. Others like the two described below understand a shipping box can be much more than that. It can be a very powerful communication tool able to make a lasting, positive impression. They also were pleased to know that a branded box is not much more expensive than a plain, unprinted box, IF you select the right packaging partner.

Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland – two colors on white, inside and outside

Two colors in on whiteTheir annual 5K run is a major fund raiser for this organization determined to raise awareness of the need for organ and tissue donations. When they decided to create a new “Team Captain’s Kit” to send out to leaders, they wanted something bright and attractive that could not be missed or forgotten.

They also needed to minimize cost so they chose our 12-1/4” X 9-1/4” X 2-½” stock mailer size from our large inventory of available cutting dies, saving $800 to $1,000 in initial costs. To maximize the WOW factor of their design, we worked with them to create flexographic print screens giving them multiple shades of the same two colors resulting in a four color (or more) look for the price of two colors.

Maloney Strategic Communications – One color (black) on Kraft

black on Kraft with screensAnyone who thinks black on Kraft is boring has to see this great graphic design created by Maloney Strategic for their client – The Irving Texas Convention and Visitors Bureau. The finished box is bold, interesting and is designed to stand out in anyone’s in basket or mail room when it is mailed to corporate meeting and event planners.

Our 8” X 4” X 3” stock die was perfect, eliminating the need for a costly new one. Once again we helped them to utilize screens to avoid a “flat” finish, creating a contrasting gray by screening some of the black with only one print plate.

Maximum WOW factor for Minimum Cost

We know how to work with our inks and materials to deliver the best possible looking mailer box that doubles as a presentation box. Whether it is screen printing, digital printing or perhaps the use of Kemi board for a great looking shipping box, you get the best value and impact at the lowest possible cost, including the initial cost of print plates and cutting dies.

Packaging and Labels – Compostable Together

If using compostable packaging from companies like Be Green Packaging who designs, manufactures and distributes Cradle to Cradle™ certified, tree-free, compostable packaging for the food and consumer packaging industries, or NatureFlex™ films from Innovia who supply packaging for coffee and tea to specialty foods, it is essential that a sustainable and compostable label be used on the packaging.

BPI Compostable Logo

Today we have alternatives. Compostable labels are available following compost standards of BPI, ASTM D6868, and ASTM D6400. PURE Labels™ from Distant Village Packaging are made with BPI certified compostable adhesives and natural hemp plant fiber paper to create an artisan and organically natural experience which is compostable.

Using compostable labels on compostable packaging just makes sense. Compostable labels with compostable adhesives used with compostable packaging create a truly compostable packaging solution.

Trucks are always faster than shipsThose of us who have been around the packaging industry for any length of time watched as jobs and manufacturing went overseas, quickly followed by packaging. Our claims of better quality, faster deliveries, etc. fell on deaf ears as buyers were increasingly attracted to Asia, lured by the great deals that seemed to be available everywhere outside the USA. I recall one particularly excited buyer who said “Free tooling, delivered pricing, comparable quality at less than half the price, how can I possibly resist?” Many did not try to resist but many of those same companies and buyers are now bringing their manufacturing and/or their packaging home again.

What happened to the great deals?

With a bit of a tweak to the old adage, I am saying when something is too good to be true, it probably won’t be for long. An explosive increase in business resulted in some unavoidable problems. These include:

  • Labor costs rising
  • Environmental concerns resulting in regulation and increased costs
  • Transportation costs increasing dramatically
  • Quality control and safety issues
  • Lead time and delivery problems
  • Communication and ethics issues

In other words, many of the problems we had here, that helped drive buyers there, are bringing them back again.

Domestic Quality of Packaging

“Is it like that foreign cardboard?” many would ask as I pitched our 100% recycled content corrugated, or our 100% PCW recycled corrugated board packaging. What they were asking is, is it going to have that same yellow color, that same shoddy appearance and in some cases, even the same unpleasant smell? People understood and acknowledged the difference between higher quality domestic and lower quality imported packaging products.

I would be the first to admit that generally the quality of foreign made packaging, especially foreign made corrugated has substantially improved over time and in most cases, the gap between us and them is not as far apart as it used to be. However, it is still not the same.

While they continue to have a tremendous advantage in labor intensive packaging areas such as handmade, specialty packaging; on mass produced packaging we have maintained the quality advantage with more productive and consistent equipment and better quality materials. Why do you see outbound containers of our waste material at almost any seaport? Simply put – our waste is not only more plentiful, it is also generally of better quality. This results in consistent fibers, stronger packaging containers and better print quality.

What is the first thing to go, when a packaging manufacturing plant (or country) gets too busy?

This question would result in a good, lengthy debate because there are so many accurate answers. Some might say quality, and honestly, neither foreign nor domestic packaging manufacturing is immune.

Others would argue that pricing is the first indicator since a busy plant does not have to “give it away” or more strategically, once you successfully buy the market share you want, you are able to raise your prices to where you want them to be. Or perhaps it is just basic economics with fast rising costs driving fast rising selling prices?

In my opinion, the first indicator of a plant that is overwhelmed is lead times and ship dates, which may increase resulting in my last point listed above. “I am tired of being lied to” one disappointed customer recently said to us as they asked us to take on their substantial packaging volume so they could begin weaning themselves from a foreign supplier that they had grown far too dependent on. BTW, we shipped the first order in 7 working days only because we had to make new print plates for the customer.

Another customer was on the verge of missing a critical new product launch date thanks to a blown ship date for some internal packaging they were importing. We were able to create a molded foam insert for them and deliver it within two weeks so they could ship product out on time. Were we more expensive? Of course we were, but “not as much as I anticipated” was the customer’s blunt response.

What is Right about Domestic Packaging?

I can’t speak for the entire packaging industry but after a few decades I know many of our friends feel the same way – we are going to try to give you the best product possible, on time, at a very competitive price. We are also going to create American jobs in the process, helping people afford to buy the products you are selling.

We may not have the lowest price in today’s worldwide supply chain, but the difference may not be as great as it once was. Maybe that same buyer I mentioned above is today saying, “Great quality, minimal inventory, delivery dates I can count on, at a very competitive price, how can I resist?”

For a frank and honest discussion on your foreign made packaging challenges, please contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 815-609-3600. I am very confident, we can help you bring your packaging home.

However, there are times when our clients prefer a minimalist approach to branding. Let’s face it, is there a more effective or minimal branding than the iconic Amazon “smile”?

Keeping it simple and avoiding multiple colors can make a lot of sense from several perspectives including mailer box cost as well as flexographic print plate cost. That does not mean the end result has to look plain or boring. Check out these recent boxes we helped our customers create:

Groovy Lab in a Box – their design makes maximum use of one color, both inside and outside the box. Recently they were able to rebrand this product with one quick print plate change for the outside of their box with minimal cost. This is a great look for the first product of their Academics in a Box series of STEM based learning tools that are also fun and entertaining. Check them out at www.academicsinabox.com

one color print on stock size Kraft mailerwww.EcoEmi.com – they chose a box from our stock die collection (8-1/2” X 5-3/16” X 1-9/16”) and were able to avoid the cost of a custom cutting die. Their graphic design is very basic but still very attractive and appropriate for their “all natural products monthly” subscription program.

www.NicPik.com – Is there anything more striking than basic black which also happens to look great against natural Kraft (brown) corrugated board? That is the route these people decided to go with their “e-juice” subscription program providing e-cigarette users with options they never imagined. They were also able to use one of our stock dies (5-13/16” X 5-3/4” X 1-15/16”) to save time and money.custom print on stock box size

These are all companies on the rise and one reason is that they deliver terrific products in an attractive box that is eco-friendly with 100% recycled content board that is also 100% recyclable.

In the face of increasing competition the presentation impact for maximizing the customer experience is crucial, and we provide the tools and knowledge you need to create a shipping box that fits your product well beyond just the physical dimensions. Please contact Salazar Packaging for a no cost, no obligation review of your needs.

multi-color without platesWe are constantly adding new manufacturing partners and potential solutions to our lineup because our customers’ needs are always changing and expanding.

Most of the printing we do on corrugated board and paperboard is high speed flexographic, resulting in great results at the lowest possible cost. However, there are times when more is needed in terms of flexibility or image quality and digital printing fills a very important void for high quality but short run applications.

No Cutting Dies? No Printing Plates? No problem!one color on paperboard

While flexographic printing is by far much more economical on a cost per piece basis, it can also be expensive from a startup perspective because the cost of cutting dies and plates can run into thousands of dollars, especially for multi-color designs, printed inside and outside. This may make a short run or multiple copy design cost prohibitive.

The big advantage of digital print is that virtually any type or grade of board can be digitally printed without plates, and then cut on a CAD table without a cutting die. This makes it possible (though not inexpensive) to run as few as fifty custom printed boxes with no investment in (plates or dies) hardware.short run promo printing on corrugated

Amazing quality for short run printing!

If flexibility wasn’t enough, unparalleled quality is also available using this process whose images rival very costly litho labels and process print. The difference once again is that digital printing is possible on quantities under 100 and process and litho labels minimum are usually in the thousands.

Digital Printing – the ideal solution for unique packaging applications

We don’t want to mislead anyone into thinking this is a way to avoid large minimums and tooling at competitive pricing. Digital printing is quite expensive but it offers capabilities no other form of packaging printing can deliver and in specific situations it can actually be a money saver. These situations and applications include:

  • Variable Data printing
  • Personalized prints
  • Sales or show samples
  • One time or limited promotions
  • Test market packaging
  • Photo quality images or multi-color graphics required
  • Coatings and varnishes are needed

photo quality images on packagingThis is just a partial list but the bottom line is when you need something unique in smaller quantities, digital can be the best solution we have to offer from our extensive menu of print options for every possible scenario.

Contact Salazar Packaging for a no cost, no obligation, and completely confidential review of your needs. We are confident we will be able to help you make an informed decision from the wide assortment of branding options we offer.

Most of our paper shopping bags and many of our plastic shopping bags are made from recycled materials. We have lots of bags that are 100% recycled content. Since the foil in the hot stamping process is a very small percentage of the bag content, these bags are recyclable. green 20Sad but true. We are discontinuing our program of stock RSC style shipping boxes. Here are a few of the questions we have already been asked:

Are all Globe Guard® 100% recycled content RSC boxes no longer available?

The only part of our program that is being eliminating is the stock boxes. We can still custom run plain or printed boxes as ordered in any size or board grade.

What is the minimum for a “custom run”

In most cases the minimum is 1,000 per size whether they are plain or printed. Let us price printed boxes for you and you will be surprised how relatively inexpensive they can be. In most cases a standard, basic one color print, even at the 1,000 minimum adds less than a dime per box to the cost.

boxes-Home Page6884WEBWhat type of clearance discount are you offering on RSC boxes?

The minimum discount at this time on any of our remaining sizes is 20%. The plan is to continue dropping the price until all stock is gone. However, purchases are limited to stock on hand and when they are gone, they will not be replaced. Several sizes were already quickly depleted as soon as word of this excellent deal got out.

What about quantity discounts and shipping costs?

The quantity discounts still apply as does our standard $5, $10, and $15 per unit shipping policy. However, if you place a large order (20 or more bundles) and it will save you money to ship via LTL common carrier, on a pallet, we will make that suggestion to you for additional savings.

What about your Globe Guard STOCK die cut mailer boxes?

There is no change to that program at all. In fact, eliminating the RSC stock will enable us to focus and increase our die cut mailer selection which is what most of our customers are telling us they want.

Will you still be offering custom printed die cut mailers?

Most definitely! We have quickly become a leading supplier of branded mailer boxes for many uses including e-commerce and subscription boxes, and our goal is to grow that part of our business by making it even easier for our custom print customers. More products, more options and lower pricing.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions about remaining stock or shipping. We are very grateful to past Globe Guard RSC stock box customers and hope to continue serving you in the future.

Choosing the Best Compostable or Recycled Packaging and Labels http://www.greenpackaginggroup.com/industry-experts/choosing-best-compostable-recycled-packaging-labels/ http://www.greenpackaginggroup.com/industry-experts/choosing-best-compostable-recycled-packaging-labels/#comments Wed, 14 May 2014 10:55:53 +0000 http://www.greenpackaginggroup.com/?p=3463 There are now many sustainable packaging choices. How do you know what to choose for your sustainable packaging and labels?

Options abound!

To keep things simple, let’s consider the scenario of a sustainable business seeking adhesive labels.

wine spirit beer labelsThere are now many sustainable packaging choices. How do you know what to choose for your sustainable packaging and labels?

Options abound!

To keep things simple, let’s consider the scenario of a sustainable business seeking adhesive labels.

Focus On What’s Important

When determining which adhesive label solution to choose, focus on these two decision criteria: 1) what is important to your sustainable business position, and 2) what is important for performance requirements of your packaging.

Your product and company sustainable position are important to the packaging choices you make. If your sustainable business produces fair trade chocolates, then it may be valuable to use paper adhesive labels using paper sourced from a Fair Trade Federation member. Whereas if you’re producing micro-beer made from organic-certified hops and barley, fair trade may be less important, however an all-natural 100% recycled organic paper packaging made in USA with wind energy may be the bulls-eye to solidify your marketing message and create the right brand image. If you are in sustainable business, you understand that all aspects of your business, including packaging and labels, are important to your conscientious consumers!

Now let’s consider label performance. As you look to performance requirements, the chocolate company may have a product with the following application scenario: dry application, dry usage, ambient/room temperature, short-term use and low handling. For this reason, the 100% Natural Fair Trade adhesive label would be an excellent choice as it performs in addition to meeting their business.

The micro-brewery beer labels may need to take a different route. The product packaging is may be a smooth bottle, however, they may not be dry and may not be ambient temperature during application or use. To stand up to the bottles rubbing against each other and the wet and cold environment (picture an ice-cold bottle of beer with condensation on warm summer day!), the best solution would be a 100% Recycled Wet-Strength paper label.

Now that the critical business needs are in place, add on other sustainable characteristics to further boost your sustainability position and, more importantly, distance yourself even more from the competition. Adding attributes like 100% Compostable, agri-based inks, wind powered energy, fair trade, American made, tree-free, hemp-based paper, and more help you to further define your brand by establishing packaging and labels with attributes which complement your brand position.

ResourcesIt is a very exciting time when contemplating creating your own internet business but it can also be an extremely stressful time because there is much more involved than it appears. When we launched our first e-commerce web site in 2008, we suddenly realized how much we did not know, and the importance of learning it all quickly to avoid unnecessary costs and delays.

We have enjoyed working with the subscription box market for several years and have assisted over forty different companies from concept to successful launch. They ship everything from healthy snacks to DIY jewelry designs and we are proud to say our customers stand out in an ever increasingly crowded e-commerce field.

Over the years we have noticed that many of our customers had the same questions and concerns as they tried to build their business from scratch. At the same time, we have also made numerous contacts with other companies who like us, work with e-commerce and subscription box clients, so collecting and sharing these marvelous resources with our friends and customers just seems like the right thing to do.

Here are a few of the most common questions we have been asked:

How can I create a subscription box web site that is effective for our customers and for us?

Very few of our customers have the luxury of operating in an exclusive market with no competition so the key becomes getting found within the thousands of results in a typical Google search. Having a web site that is both attractive and intuitive is only the beginning since the typical site also has to be capable of handling initial credit card payments, repeat billing, order processing, inventory control and follow up. Beyond basic analytics, as the business grows, processing and understanding the volumes of information gathered is important to maintain growth and to identify lost and non-repeat customers. For those seeking expert help, we recommend www.CrateJoy.com because they can save you precious time, money and help to accelerate your success.

Escape Monthly.comWhat do I do when I outgrow my own packing and fulfillment capabilities?

Many of our largest customers began their businesses in their basement, garage or even kitchen table. What happens when your volume exceeds your ability to satisfy your customers or subscribers orders effectively? Some will seek a facility and employ people, but many will choose to focus their personal efforts on sales and marketing while utilizing a 3rd party logistics, contract packager or fulfillment house to satisfy their customers’ orders. A couple of very good companies to consider are:

www.shipstation.com a terrific company able to handle just about any type of product and requirement. They also recently wrote a blog post and included us for some expert input on custom printed, branded packaging. You can read that post here: http://www.shipstation.com/blog/handling-your-business/consider-branded-shipping-box/#vanilla-comments

www.IDcomlog.com has a brochure dedicated to subscription programs which you can see here: http://idcomlog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014_ID_SubscriptionBox.pdf They provide a variety of packaging services at their centrally located, suburban Chicago facility, saving their coast to coast clients valuable time and shipping costs. We also serve as a reference since they do the fulfillment for our own e-commerce green packaging store www.GlobeGuardProducts.com.

How can I reduce my postage and shipping costs?

When many subscription companies receive the products they are shipping at greatly reduced costs or even for free, most are surprised to find that shipping costs are their single greatest expense.

The guys behind this company helped write the book on subscription programs with two successful programs launched in three years on their resume’. What they discovered and you will too, is that postage can really eat into your profits, so they created www.postagepirate.com Don’t let the humorous, clever web site fool you. Postage cost is a serious problem and the people at Postage Pirate know how to help you minimize it.

Can I afford custom printed or branded packaging?

With increased competition, I usually tell people they cannot afford to use plain, unprinted boxes, especially when the additional cost is so minimal. In most cases, your packaging is the first tangible contact you have with your customer so making that great first impression and creating brand recognition is important.

We are becoming one of the fastest growing companies in the country of plain and custom printed die cut mailer boxes, mailer envelopes and interior packaging. Check out the following link and you may also find the related posts listed below helpful.
