Several versions of stock 9x6x2 mailerSubscription programs are an excellent way to develop and grow an E-commerce business. They vary greatly from snack foods to DIY programs for home based fashion designers as well as for kids. What they all have in common is that they are attempting to establish a long term, reoccurring relationship with a consumer that buys the products the subscription company offers. The business model is well proven and it can be profitable quickly, if you follow some fairly simple advice.

One of the first things potential shippers look at is the possibility of utilizing custom printed, branded packaging which is an area that we specialize in. After dozens and dozens of successful launches, we are eager to help you navigate through the process.

Are you ready for custom printed packaging?

Certainly if anyone knows the value of great looking packaging, we do. However, people are often surprised when after a quick review of their situation, our response is “you’re not there yet”. That is a selfless response designed to protect the new company from making a premature investment and commitment.

One of the key factors is order quantity. Even with our low minimum of 1,000 boxes for any custom printed mailer, that is a lot of boxes when you are first getting started. Our advice is usually to wait until you get to at least 200, ideally 300 or 400 subscribers per month before making the possible investment in a cutting die and experiencing the certain costs of print plates, shipping and storage space.

A plain/unprinted stock box alternative

We often suggest beginning with an unprinted stock mailer box from our green packaging store. The boxes we sell there are the same high quality, 100% recycled content Globe Guard® boxes we offer for custom print applications, but they are unprinted and available quickly in minimal quantities of 25 or 50 boxes, which is usually more than enough to do some preliminary sampling and test marketing. Branding can be accomplished with an attractive label that can be self-produced or at your local corner print shop.

The other thing that makes this a great way to get started is that it makes the transition to branded packaging easier when your volume increases. If it is a stock size from our store, we already have a cutting die which saves you around $800 and we can create print plates at minimal cost and delay.

On subscription boxes, size REALLY matters.

Whether you are ready for a custom printed box or plan to initially utilize an unprinted stock box, one of the very first things you will have to decide is how large of a box you really need, or as we prefer to look at it, how SMALL of a box will work for you and your program.

We will usually suggest to resist the temptation of using a larger box than necessary because you will have to fill it or your subscribers are not going to be pleased about receiving “a half empty” box. Using a larger box than is necessary will also of course cost more per box while adding additional expenses of inbound shipping cost, storage costs and outbound mailing/shipping costs.

If it is a new launch, with little available history of products being shipped, customer needs, etc., a premature move into custom branded boxes can prove very costly if you later decide to increase or decrease the size of the box.

I often tell people about our own “re-branding” after only six months of operation. Business plans are designed to be flexible so we usually suggest NOT locking yourself into a long-term cost and decision before you really have to. Clients are disappointed to find out the $800 print plates they recently bought cannot be adjusted to accommodate a change of box size.

Creating your own subscription box program can be quite rewarding in many ways and we are always happy to spend some time discussing (confidentially) your concept or program. We are usually not able to give you exact costs until you finalize your box style, size, and printing requirements, but we can typically give you a ball park idea of the costs you can expect.

Feel free to contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 815-609-3600 for a no cost, no obligation review of your application. We have also listed several additional blog post links below that other subscription box owners have found very helpful. Also, please check out the new gallery on our web site where we show some of the boxes we have helped customers create.

Bakery Boxes BlackNashville Wraps bakery packaging just got a grand new look with the addition of our Black Licorice Bakery Boxes. They are a great complement to our very popular 100% recycled Pink, Chocolate and White Bakery Boxes.  All of these boxes range in size from a single cupcake design up to a large sheet cake with every size in between to hold pies, cookies, brownies, pastries and more.

What is really fun about the new black gloss design is that you can write on these boxes with chalkboard markers like we did in the photo above. This is such a cute way to personalize your boxes.

Bakers Twine Type ShotLooking for an eco-friendly ribbon? We suggest using our 100% Cotton Bakers Twine. It is the perfect trimming for these boxes. This made in the USA product comes in solid colors and 2-color and 3-color styles like Candy Shop (pink, brown & white), Aqua & White and vintage Cherry Red & White.

We recommend using our Cake Pads to help you easily load your cakes into the boxes. They are made from 68% recycled material and 100% recyclable. These grease proof pads are made in the USA.

For cupcakes and muffins, you’ll want to add our Cupcake Holders. They are made from 100% recycled paper in the USA and are available in regular and mini sizes. The 4x4x4” single cupcake boxes make sweet wedding and party favors.

You work so hard at making your bakery items look beautiful. So make sure the packaging is gorgeous as well. And remember, green can be beautiful too!

Most of our customers understand and appreciate that we can help them accomplish both their sustainability and branding objectives. The best of both worlds!

Eco Friendly and Green Branded Packaging Solutions

Globe Guard® RSC style shipping boxes – even though we are ending our stock box program, we can still make 100% recycled content and 100% recyclable corrugated boxes in a low 500 minimum for plain/unprinted and 1,000 minimum for custom printed.

Globe Guard® Die Cut Mailers – Customer applications vary greatly as do corrugated board construction but most of our die cut mailer boxes are at least 60% recycled content, and most are still 100% recycled content or better. Like our RSC boxes above, ALL are 100% recyclable, repulpable, biodegradable, and even compostable. In addition, ALL of our RSC and die cut mailer boxes are always printed with eco-friendly, water based inks for the best print results and minimal negative environmental impact.

Globe Guard® Unpadded, Paper Mailer Envelopes – a customer favorite for years, these mailers are ideal for shipping soft goods and clothing. They are also 100% recycled content, 100% recyclable, and can be custom printed in a very low, one case minimum.

fsc-logoFSC-Certified packaging continues to rise in popularity, and we are producing more FSC-Certified packaging than ever.  Elevate Packaging is one of the few packaging companies using only FSC-Certified papers to create custom folding carton boxes and rigid set-up boxes.

Often we are asked what is FSC certified paper, and what are the benefits of choosing it over conventional paper — especially when the latter may be less expensive?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, an organization that works to promote the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. The Forest Stewardship Council sets standards for forest products, independently certifies that these standards have been met, and bestows labels upon the products that qualify. Forest Stewardship Council certification gives customers the option to choose forest products like paper and wood that have been sourced in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner. FSC was founded in 1993 in response to concerns about deforestation.

Benefits of FSC-Certified Packaging

FSC-certified packaging is different from recycled packaging, as it’s typically composed of virgin tree fibers rather than pre- or post-consumer recycled materials (although recycled packaging is sometimes also FSC-certified). But when the wood pulp used to make this packaging paper is sourced from a well-managed forest, it can be just as eco-friendly.

According to the Forest Stewardship Council, the U.S. consumes 100 million tons of paper annually, and recycled paper makes up just 35 percent of that amount. The remainder must come from timber forests. Encouraging businesses to use FSC packaging can make a big difference since it drives wood suppliers to protect habitat, prevent pollution, plant more trees than are harvested, and avoid displacing native peoples and harming wildlife.

FSC Certification Standards

What makes packaging sustainable? Like many other green buzzwords including organic and natural, the word sustainable can be vague. With its FSC-Certified label, the Forest Stewardship Council defines a strict set of standards that packaging must meet in order to prove that they are truly environmentally and socially responsible.

The FSC requires packaging products that bear an FSC-certified label to go through a chain-of-custody from the forest to the manufacturer to the merchant and finally, to the packaging converter. Independent, third-party auditors conduct chain-of-custody assessments of companies that would like to achieve FSC certification. The FSC also requires a management plan, which outlines the scale and intensity of logging and renewal operations in addition to long-term objectives for maintaining the health of the forest.

The standard FSC certification labels indicate the paper source of the packaging as indicated in this graphic.

Custom Branded ProductsThis is one of the first questions we ask any new inquiry about custom printed packaging and potential customer because that answer helps us determine everything from print plate cost to of course, container price. Occasionally a caller will question the need for all of our questions but as I remind people, you are no longer buying “off the rack”, and ordering a box that is already made and sitting in someone’s inventory. Since we print corrugated board, BEFORE it is converted to boxes, we can essentially make your box to your exact specifications. That gives you complete control and flexibility. There are many variations, but here are a few of the most popular options.

Custom Printed Packaging Container Types

  1. RSC shipping boxes – the typical shipping container that has four flaps on top and four flaps on the bottom requiring a tape closure at top and bottom.

Advantages – the lowest cost per box option and requires no tooling or cutting die. Print plates for this type of box are usually less expensive compared to other container options.

Disadvantages – this style tends to look rather industrial and does not create the presentation or image that is often desired by some customers.

  1. FOL (Full Over Lap) Boxes – unlike the above RSC style boxes where the top and bottom flaps meet in the middle of the box, on a FOL box the flaps completely overlap each other.

Advantages – the overlapping flaps make the box much stronger because it essentially creates a double wall on two ends. Depending on the dimensions of the box, it can also be less expensive because the multiple large over lapping (RSC) flaps are eliminated. Typically it uses less corrugated board.

Disadvantages – Even though you have the option of an end load (opens at short ends of the box) or side load (opens at the long ends of the box) it can be difficult to load some types of products. For example, it is great for KD furniture, back packs and purses but not ideal for soft goods and clothing.

  1. Die Cut Mailers – This lid or top is hinged at the back, enabling the box to open like a cigar box, delivering more of the presentation look most e-commerce and subscription programs want. They are available in several different designs, with a variety of features.

Advantages – Aside from appearance, this style of box is easier to open, reducing the risk of customer damage of the product. The inside lid panel provides a great billboard for custom printing your logo, message or simply a thank you. There are also many variations and designs for die cut mailers so you can get the exact style and size you want and need.

Disadvantages – Unless you can use a size that we already have a cutting die for (and we have many) you may have to make a one time investment in a cutting die, but then the box can be exactly as you want it. No off the rack for you. Print plates for a die cut mailer may be slightly more expensive compared to an RSC style box, but inside print is an option that is usually not practical for an RSC box.

  1. Mailer envelopes – There are times when the best box for a product is not a box at all. We will usually recommend a paper or plastic mailer envelope for items that do not require the protection provided by a corrugated box. Typical applications are soft goods ranging from high fashion clothing to tee shirts.

Advantages – lower cost and less waste disposal for your customers. Most mailer envelopes also have the convenient peel and seal adhesive strip, saving time and eliminating the need for tape closures. They also take up less space to ship and store and usually result in lower shipping weights. Unpadded paper mailers also can be custom printed in a low, one case minimum and print plates are also comparatively very low in cost.

Disadvantages – Product can arrive a little crumpled and wrinkled so it may not create the upscale image you are attempting to create.

This may all sound overwhelming and confusing but it really is not. We help customers every day determine the best packaging solution for their very specific needs, and we have the variety of products as well as the expertise to help you accomplish your custom printed packaging goals at the lowest possible price. Please contact us at Salazar Packaging for a no cost, no obligation, and confidential review of your needs.

Customer Service Satisfaction Survey - ConceptI admit that I have finally reached the point in my career where almost everyone I deal with in business is younger than me; in some cases, much younger than me. I am enjoying it tremendously because I find the combination of my age and experience, mixed with their youthful energy and creativity results in some great looking and effective packaging. They come up with the most amazing original ideas and I show them how to best accomplish the desired outcome at the lowest possible cost. One of the things that I most enjoy about working with young, creative marketing people is their refreshing focus on the customer.

I agree with this approach wholeheartedly because for too many years I think the packaging industry was focused primarily on operating and financial performance measures. Worse yet, the industry considered shipping boxes as utilitarian and simply meant to take a package from point A to point B.

To the contrary, young designers and buyers view shipping containers as a marketing tool and an opportunity to impress the customer with their performance as well as their appearance.

Their favorite two expressions are enhancing the customer experience and increasing the WOW factor. My generation called it creating a good first impression but no matter what it is called, the focus remains where it should be – on the customer who is receiving the packaging. It almost seems too simple to be important but I believe it is THE most important factor in designing packaging containers for e-commerce and subscription programs.

Enhancing the customer experience

As I have stated many times in writing and in presentation, the corrugated shipping container a company sends out is usually the first and only tangible contact many companies have with their e-commerce customers. There are no more door to door sales people, and retail stores are quickly becoming showrooms rather than places you buy products. In fact, most of our customers have no traditional “brick and mortar” operations selling their products only through the internet and their on line stores.

That makes the shipping container more important than ever before because it helps to influence and shape a customer’s opinion about the company shipping the product. I believe every shipping box says something about the company that shipped it and it is up to the shipper to decide whether it is going to be a positive or a negative message.

We have all been on the receiving end of a package that was poorly designed, difficult to open, or possibly plain and/or printed poorly. We know how that feels and as shippers, our objective should be to make sure our customers do NOT experience that same disappointing feeling. The best example I can come up with on this is when someone asks me how I feel about packaging peanuts. I usually respond by asking them – how do YOU feel when you receive a box that has been filled with packaging peanuts? Why in the world would anyone want their customer to experience those same negative emotions?

Today’s consumer does notice when a package is effective and it delivers undamaged and uncrushed as it protected the product enclosed. They appreciate when the box is easy to unpack and no tools or knives are required to extract the product from the box. More and more, consumers are demanding that packaging is not only made of as much recycled content as possible but also be easily recycled. The functionality of a package design is every bit as important as the appearance.

Increasing the WOW factor

The functionality described above can play a role in increasing the WOW factor but mostly this is about impressing visually. That first, and immediate impression you create when your customer sees your packaging. Is the custom printing sharp, crisp, eye-catching and memorable? Are people impressed by the uniqueness of the graphic design and does it deliver the desired look? Does it look masculine for a male audience? Does it look happy and festive for the children’s market it is intended for? How does your package standout and compare if it was stacked on a table with twenty other printed boxes?

If your packaging causes the consumer/recipient to take notice and perhaps give it a second look, you have successfully increased the WOW factor. If customers are so impressed they show it to someone else, you have accomplished the goal. If it makes your competitors envious, you have succeeded. However, mostly it is about pleasing the customer and making that all important positive first impression and ideally helping to create a loyal customer that will return time and time again.

This new, younger generation gets it and we are pleased to play a role in helping them turn great ideas into great shipping containers.

If you provide the challenge or share your vision, whether your fuel is youthful energy or not, we have the experience to help you make it happen. There are many great looking boxes out there and we have the resources and expertise to help yours stand out in the every increasingly crowded market place.

A growing need for compostable packaging at farmers markets

Communities Drive Compostable Packaging Requirements

Farmers markets such at Boulder Colorado, Marin County, Austin, and Berkeley are some places leading this trend and have taken the higher ground to establish sustainable practices within their communities.

Policies which require farmers market vendors to use compostable packaging, labels, and bags are becoming more common, as it is already in Europe. The initiative toward zero waste goes beyond recycling as the drive is to close the loop by reducing reliance on unsustainable and finite resources.

A focus to eliminate adhesive labels with plastics and plastic bags is at the heart of this important shift. For example, Americans use 100 billion plastic bags annually (more than 330 per person per year), according to Worldwatch Institute, an environmental watchdog group. The plastic bags can take anywhere from 400 to 1,000 years to break down in landfills. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil are needed to make all the bags used every year.

At these farmers markets the vendors are now required to use compostable packaging, labels, and utensils.

Compostable Criteria

I personally like this concise and clear list of compostable criteria as outlined by the BS EN 13432 standard.

Key tests, and Pass / Fail criteria are:

  • Disintegration – the packaging sample is mixed with organic waste and maintained under test scale composting conditions for 12 weeks after which time no more than 10 % of material fragments are allowed be larger than 2 mm.
  • Biodegradability – a measure of the actual metabolic, microbial conversion, under composting conditions, of the packaging sample into water, carbon dioxide and new cell biomass. Within a maximum of 6 months, biodegradation of the test sample must generate an amount of carbon dioxide that is at least 90 % as much as the carbon dioxide given off from the control / reference material.
  • Absence of any negative effect on the composting process.
  • Low levels of heavy metals (Potentially Toxic Elements) and no adverse effect of the quality of compost produced. Upper limits, in mg/kg of dry sample, are: zinc 150, copper 50, nickel 25, cadmium 0.5, lead 50, mercury 0.5, chromium 50, molybdenum 1, selenium 0.75, arsenic 5 and fluoride 100.
  • No adverse effects. The composted packaging material must not have adverse effect on the bulk density, pH, salinity (electrical conductivity), volatile solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total magnesium, total potassium and ammonium nitrogen characteristics of the compost.

Each of these tests is undertaken according to internationally agreed methods as specified in BS EN 13432. Independent laboratory test results are then compared with the strict pass / fail limits set in the standard. Only if a material passes every compostable test requirement is it proven to be compostable.

Globe Guardcustom printed mailer boxesE-tailing is not just about books and music anymore, a rapidly growing percentage of clothing and soft goods are also being purchased over the internet. Hardly a day goes by when we don’t receive a call from someone debating which option – mailer envelopes or boxes – is best for them. The factors that we consider when making a recommendation include: the number of shipments per day, week or month, order quantity, the types of products being shipped, how they are being shipped, and the relative value of the products being shipped. That last point may sound unusual, but we understand that the needs of someone shipping a $20 tee shirt are different than someone shipping a $200 dress, shirt, or blouse.

The benefits and advantages of custom printed mailer envelopes

We offer plastic mailer envelopes as well but for the purpose of this blog post we are only going to discuss our unpadded, paper mailer envelopes. BTW, this is a good time to tell you that we NEVER recommend PADDED mailers for soft goods. For that type of application the padding is unnecessary and only adds shipping weight and cost.

  1. Custom printed unpadded paper mailer envelopes are relatively inexpensive in low order quantities. They are available in low, one case quantities, so for some sizes that means a minimum as low as 200 mailer envelopes.
  2. They are available flat and gusseted. Even bulky items can pack easily in a gusseted (three dimensional) mailer envelope. Their ability to expand to the required depth makes them very versatile.Custom printed mailer envelopes with a one case minimum
  3. Our envelopes do not require tape. They come with a peel and seal adhesive strip that seals them securely, quickly and easily.
  4. Mailer envelopes do not require void fill because the envelope conforms to the size and shape of the product(s) being shipped.
  5. Unpadded mailer envelopes ship to you flat, minimizing the inbound shipping cost and the amount of space required.
  6. Art charges and plate costs are very low, usually around $125 or less per color, per side.

The benefits and advantages of custom printed boxes

  1. First of all you have a choice between two distinct styles: the typical RSC shipping box with four flaps on top and bottom (generally used for bulk or wholesale shipments) and the die cut mailer variety that offers more of a presentation/upscale look with an attached, hinged lid.
  2. Most of our corrugated boxes have a low 500 minimum for larger RSC boxes or 1,000 for smaller RSC boxes and all die cut mailers. While those are larger minimums than the above mailer envelopes, they are very low within the corrugated industry.
  3. Even though the print plates are a bit more expensive (usually $400 to $600 per color) there is a greater variety of print options available, such as flood coat printing, and/or inside print.
  4. Corrugated shipping boxes are stronger and are less likely to result in a wrinkled product arriving to your customer.

There may be other considerations and factors but these are the primary differences between these two terrific, branded packaging options. We will be glad to discuss your specific needs if you call us at 815-609-3600 or contact Salazar Packaging and Globe Guard Products via email.
